Ocean Beach, California
Always known as a fun, free-spirited, quirky but incredibly beautiful San Diego area beach town, OB (Ocean Beach) has finally gotten tired of the bums that hang out by the pier and on the beaches. Several of the “outdoorsmen” have gotten into scuffles and fights which has disillusioned the locals who have accepted them for so long. Like Santa Monica, San Francisco and so many other cities, it is difficult to not feel sorry for someone down on their luck or to be judgmental of those who choose the alternative lifestyle. But, the rollicking lifestyle of the “bums” has turned off enough of the locals and business owners to the point that one of the hottest selling items in the picturesque downtown area are stickers that read “Welcome to Ocean Beach – Please Don’t Feed our Bums”
Luckily, even though there are a few “bums” hanging around, OB is still a fantastic place to visit and live. Newport Avenue is home to lovely and fun little shops, art and antique stores and several great restaurants. There are also a lot of other restaurants, wine bistros, shops and interesting places to go on Sunset Cliffs, Bacon and other streets. Everything is close by so walking is a pleasure.
Every Wednesday afternoon there is a Farmer’s Market showcasing local fruits, vegetables, art, jewelry and many other one of a kind goodies! While in OB you will definitely want to walk out on to thevery long pier. Be sure and take your camera and photograph the surfers, beach and fabulous scenery from the end of the pier looking back.
From a real estate stand point have the “bums” dampened the demand or price appreciation in the area? No, like San Francisco, New York, Santa Monica and so many other desireable places to live, people love the area but don’t expect “perfection” Many are enchanted by the adorable beach cottages, water front and/or view condos and absolutely incredible estates in the Sunset Cliffs neighborhood. Having miles of gorgeous sandy beach and the magnificent Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, plus unbeatable weather, is quite the enticement!
